IGF-1 is a hormone that manages the effects of growth hormone (GH) in your body. Together, IGF-1 and GH promote normal growth of bones and tissues. GH levels in the blood fluctuate throughout the day depending on your diet and activity levels. But IGF-1 levels remain stable. There is not universal cut-off point for normal IGF-1 levels in adults. Instead, there are different reference ranges for this hormone depending on the age. Based on this papershowing the U-shaped curve of IGF-1 levels and mortality, and age-specific IGF-1 “normal” ranges from the Mayo Clinic laboratories, I have created something close to an “optimal” range for IGF-1 (see table below).
