What Spider Is This? A Simple Guide to Identifying Spiders Finding an unfamiliar spider in your home, garden, garage, or backyard can immediately make you wonder, “What spider is this?” While spiders can look intimidating, most species people encounter are harmless to humans and actually play an important role by feeding on flies, mosquitoes, moths, and other insects. The challenge is that many spiders share similar colors and body shapes, making identification difficult at first glance. Fortunately, you can narrow down the possibilities by paying attention to several basic features. Body shape, markings, leg structure, web style, behavior, habitat, and geographic location can all provide useful clues. Start With the Spider’s Body Shape One of the easiest ways to begin identification is to examine the overall shape of the spider. Spiders have two primary body sections, eight legs, and no antennae. The front section is the cephalothorax, while the rear section is the abdomen. Some spiders have large, rounded abdomens, while others are slender, flattened, or elongated. Jumping spiders tend to have compact bodies and relatively short, sturdy legs. Wolf spiders are generally robust and hairy. Cellar spiders have extremely long, thin legs compared with their small bodies. Body shape can often tell you more than color alone because unrelated spider species may have similar colors. A brown spider, for example, could belong to several completely different groups. Pay Attention to the Web If the spider is sitting in or near a web, the web itself can be an excellent identification clue. Not every spider uses a web to capture prey, so the absence of a web is useful information too. Orb-weaving spiders produce the familiar circular webs with radiating lines and spiral sections. These spiders are commonly found around gardens, vegetation, fences, porches, and other outdoor areas. Cobweb spiders create irregular, three-dimensional tangles of silk, often in quiet corners, garages, sheds, and around windows. Funnel weavers construct sheet-like webs that lead toward a funnel or retreat where the spider waits for prey.
Other spiders, including many wolf spiders and jumping spiders, actively hunt instead of relying on a prey-catching web. Watching whether the spider sits patiently in silk or moves around searching for prey can therefore help narrow down its group. Look Closely at the Legs Legs provide another useful clue. Notice whether they are extremely long and thin, short and powerful, hairy, spiny, or marked with bands. A spider with very long, delicate legs found hanging in a messy web may be a cellar spider. A compact spider with relatively short legs that seems to move quickly and frequently stop to look around could be a jumping spider. Also consider the position of the legs when the spider is resting. Although this isn’t enough to confirm a species, it can help distinguish broad groups when combined with other characteristics. Check the Markings and Color Color and markings are useful, but they should not be the only features you rely on. Lighting, age, sex, molting, and individual variation can change how a spider appears in a photograph. Look for distinctive patterns such as stripes, spots, bands, contrasting patches, or unusual shapes on the abdomen or cephalothorax. If you see a potentially significant marking, compare it with the spider’s body shape and location rather than assuming that one pattern automatically identifies the species. Geographic location is especially important. A spider that is common in one region may be absent from another, so knowing where you found it can eliminate many incorrect possibilities. Take a Clear Photograph If you’re asking, “What spider is this?” because you’ve found one you cannot recognize, a good photograph can make identification much easier. Try to capture the spider from above so its body pattern is visible. A side photograph can also reveal body shape and proportions. If the spider is sitting in a web, photograph the web as well because its structure may provide an additional clue. Avoid disturbing the spider just to obtain a closer photograph. Zooming or cropping a clear image is safer than getting unnecessarily close to an unfamiliar animal. Common Spider Groups You May Encounter Several groups appear frequently around homes and gardens. Jumping spiders are generally small, compact, and active during the day. House and cobweb spiders commonly create tangled webs in sheltered areas. Cellar spiders are recognizable for their extremely long legs and delicate appearance. There are also crab spiders, sac spiders, funnel weavers, fishing spiders, nursery web spiders, and many other groups. Because spiders are extremely diverse, an identification may sometimes be more reliable at the family or group level than at the exact species level. Should You Be Worried About an Unknown Spider? Seeing an unfamiliar spider does not automatically mean there is a danger. Most spiders are predators of other small animals and generally avoid humans. Even species capable of biting typically do not seek out people. If you are concerned about a particular spider, avoid handling it until you have identified it. Pay attention to its appearance, location, behavior, and markings, and use a reliable identification resource to narrow down the possibilities. The most accurate approach is to combine several clues rather than relying on a single feature. A spider’s body shape, web, markings, behavior, habitat, and geographic range can work together to create a much clearer picture. So the next time you find yourself staring at eight legs and wondering, “What spider is this?”, don’t rely on color alone. Take a clear photograph, examine the body and web, consider where you found it, and compare several characteristics at once. With a little observation and the right identification tool, that mysterious spider may become much easier to recognize.
