Why are the commons important? We are facing some really big issues that we can only solve together: climate change, resource depletion, open source incentivization—these are all public goods that are prone to the free-rider problem. This same problem underlies the extraction of environmental resources as well as the chronic underfunding of open source code. It’s a coordination problem that underlies many of the biggest problems we face. The Commons Stack wants to scale the commons and provide a library of open source blockchain tools that enable purpose-driven communities to raise and allocate funding, make decisions and measure impact, to mitigate the free-rider problem and address the biggest problems of our times.
