Styling your table at Christmas can create a festive atmosphere for you and your guests. When it comes to making your table look great, there are a couple of things you can do; in this article, we have some great tips for dressing your dining table.

Select a colour scheme

To improve the overall look of your table, you should choose a colour scheme. This will help you select items that work together and create a cohesive look; you can colour coordinate your plates, decorations, tablecloth, table runner and Christmas crackers. Choose one or two colours that go together for your colour scheme. Some colour schemes you could opt for include traditional green and red, red and gold, red and white, silver and white, blue and gold, natural green and brown, purple and white and grey and white. There are plenty of other colour schemes you can choose if you don’t like any of these. Ideally, your whole room and Christmas tree should match the colour scheme of your table to make the best impression.

Select a theme

Your colour scheme and theme should match; you can always stick to your colour scheme as your theme. Alternatively, you could opt for a natural style theme for your dining table and decorations, bringing in plants and real pine cones to decorate the table. A traditional theme is also very popular; you can use garlands, bows, baubles, and lights to decorate your table. If you love animals, you could opt for an animal-based theme, bringing different animals, such as reindeer, into the table decoration throughout your napkins, tablecloths and even your glasses.

Create a centrepiece

A centrepiece is a great way to make your dining table look more impressive and dramatic. If you’re opting for a traditional, natural style theme, you can create a centrepiece from garlands and pine cones. Many modern dining tables also add flowers to the table centrepiece to bring in more colour. If you’re stuck for time or don’t feel very creative, you can buy table centrepiece decorations online and base the rest of your table decoration on this.

Table cloth

Many people choose to cover their dining tables at Christmas with a themed tablecloth. This can help prevent spills and accidental damage. In addition, it can cover up an old table or a miss match of several tables. It’s not necessary to cover your dining table; if you love the look of the oak, you can opt to leave it uncovered. Table mats and table runners can protect your table without you having to cover it with a tablecloth.

Decoration

Candles are a great way to add decoration, lighting and a pleasant scent to your table. Opt for candles that aren’t too overpowering and complement your meal. Personalised name settings offer a lovely personal touch to your table. You can create these easily with folded cards or even Christmas cards. Alternatively, a fun way to show guests their seats is to bake biscuits and pipe your guest’s name onto the biscuit. They can then enjoy the biscuit as a pre or post-dinner snack.

Plates and glasses

Christmas is the perfect time to bring out your fancy plates and glasses. A table of beautifully matching plates and glasses is a wonderful sight. Alternatively, you could make things fun by picking out a mismatch of Christmas-themed plates for guests to eat from. If you’re choosing a mismatched theme, everything should be different and quirky to stop it from looking too messy.

Inspiration

One of the best ways to get inspiration for your Christmas dinner table is to look online at examples. You can also take out all of your Christmas decorations and use these as inspiration for your Christmas-themed dining table. If you’re worried about the budget, choose a few items that can be used every year to decorate your table. Alternatively, go on the search for natural decorations such as pine cones and holly; you can source, clean and use these on your table without needing to spend anything.

Christmas is a fun time to celebrate with friends and family, have fun with your table decorations and don’t worry if they’re not perfect.
