A presentation at Monktoberfest in in Portland, ME, USA by Taylor Barnett
I’ve seen many kinds of exclusionary nerdery in companies and communities firsthand, like, “Oh, you’ve never used a floppy disk?!” At the same time, I’ve found myself on the other side of a young developer asking me what came before “serverless.” And I had to ensure I was not like, “What?!” This talk is about our industry’s ability (or lack thereof) to communicate and tell stories about our history, exclusionary nerdery, and building teams and communities that embrace different experience levels.
The following resources were mentioned during the presentation or are useful additional information.
Rachel’s talk I mention in the talk, where I got the term “exclusionary nerdery” from
Sarah’s talk on Agile Manifesto, I mention that the Agile Manifesto is a great example of “Empathy failure” in the talk
