A new iteration of “West Side Story” has arrived, courtesy of producer and director Steven Spielberg, who worked from a script by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner (“Lincoln”). It’s already picking up awards steam, with critical raves and a spot atop the AFI Top 10 Films of the Year list, and now general audiences across the country are able to see it.
The film has been adapted for the screen from the original 1957 Broadway musical, which was written by Arthur Laurents with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and concept, direction, and choreography by Jerome Robbins. Tony Award winner Justin Peck choreographs the musical numbers in the film.
Tony Award-winning producer Kevin McCollum and Academy Award-nominated producer Kristie Macosko Krieger also led the production.
The film’s music team includes conductor Gustavo Dudamel; Academy Award-nominated composer and conductor David Newman (“Anastasia”), who arranged the score for the new adaptation; Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori (Broadway’s “Fun Home” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie”), who will work with the cast on vocals; and Grammy-nominated music supervisor Matt Sullivan (“Beauty and the Beast” and “Chicago”), who served as executive music producer for the film.

West Side Story 2021 Rating, Runtime, Cast, and Description
The runtime for West Side Story 2021 is 2 hours and 36 minutes, and the film has a PG-13 rating. In addition to newcomer Rachel Zegler as Maria and Ansel Elgort as Tony, the film stars Ariana DeBose (Anita), David Alvarez (Bernardo), Mike Faist (Riff), Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino), Ana Isabelle (Rosalía), Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank), Maddie Ziegler (Velma), and Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke). As the star-crossed lovers’ relationship grows, so do tensions between the gangs, and they end up paying the price.

The movie has been certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with a current score of 94%, as well as scoring an 86 on Metacritic (the same as its 1961 predecessor) and earning the site’s “Must-See” designation.
In Todd Gilchrist’s review of West Side Story for What to Watch, he called the film “a triumphant, socially-relevant update that showcases Steven Spielberg’s excitement for staging the musical of his dreams while simultaneously offering a sense of purpose — if not necessarily meaning — to the seemingly unrelenting volatility that has defined the last year (or two).”
In addition to the positive reviews, West Side Story has also already been feted with some awards. The National Board of Review selected Rachel Zegler as its Best Actress for the year and included West Side Story in its list of top films.
